Glossybox Replacement Box Review, June 2015

When they debuted a few years ago, Glossybox raised the bar significantly for beauty subscriptions.  That applied to both their product and their relationship with customers. Since then, other beauty subs have stepped up but the stellar customer service provided by Glossybox remains unsurpassed.  Here's a recent example.

A few months ago, I came to the end of an annual Glossybox subscription.  In checking my records, it appeared that I had received only 11 boxes.  Since the timing of a few of them was erratic, I wasn't sure if I'd miscounted or if Glossybox had shorted me one box.  Of course, there is also the possibility that I made a mistake. (No!!!)  I contacted Glossybox, not expecting a positive outcome.  A representative quickly replied with 12 tracking numbers, all of which showed delivery.  I thanked her for taking the time to do that.  I said that I felt one of those boxes had not arrived but in light of their tracking information, accepted the situation.  Next thing I knew, she e-mailed and said a replacement box was on the way! That, my friends, is outstanding customer service and the reason for this post; i.e., free positive publicity!

In reading other reviews, the box I received does not seem to be the regular June box.  But I'm not complaining; this box contained four full size items and one luxury sample.  The box itself is gift quality (as usual) and has a nice subtle holiday pattern.

The inside presentation was just as beautiful with a red grosgrain ribbon and matching paper.

Here are the five items:

The tri-fold information card gives color photos, brief tips and descriptions plus retail prices.

First out is a lovely Bellapierre mineral lipstick in the shade "Burlesque", an intense cool toned fuschia.  (Retail $19.99)

Next is a 2.5 oz. tube (full size) of Miracle Scrub in Ginseng & Ginkgo Biloba from Rituals Cosmetics.  This is an "ultra softening hand scrub" that you massage into dry hands, then rinse off.  (Retail $17)

The only ho-hum product for me is this Mini Paint Pot from Ciate in "Humbug" which is a not-to-be-ignored multi-dimensional silver and black glitter polish that can be layered over other polishes for a 3D effect.  Polishes like this are fun to play with but in my experience, just not very practical.  (Full size retail $10)

My hair happily sops up all the conditioning treatments I can pile on, so I was glad to get this Leave In Conditioner from Toni & Guy.  I use leave in conditioners prior to styling to hopefully hold in moisture and prevent heat damage. (Retail $16.99)

The fifth item is called "Masque Creme Fraiche de Beaute" from Nuxe Paris.  This is a moisturizing facial mask that contains plant milks and aloe vera sap and has a fresh orange blossom scent.  The card says this is intended for winter weather so I'll wait until the fall to try it.  (Retail $32)

After reading the information card thoroughly, I believe most of these items are winter oriented.  So this may actually be the box that Glossybox sent out in December...the one that I thought was missing.  That's completely fair and I'm in awe that they have the foresight to retain a few boxes from each month for just such replacement situations.  You rock Glossybox!

Although I'm taking a break for a while, I strongly encourage anyone who hasn't tried Glossybox to sign up.  You won't be disappointed.  The box costs $21 on a monthly basis but if you subscribe for a year, you can get that price down to just $18.50 a month, an absolute bargain for the quality and quantity of product you receive.  I have no hesitation in recommending an annual subscription since Glossybox has a stable track record to date.

Thanks again to Glossybox for going the extra mile and proving once again their commitment to world class customer service!

Cheryl

30 Days of Candy Review, June 2015 + FREE Shipping Code! (Hurry...expires 6/30/15)

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls of ALL ages!  Step right up and let me tell you about the best candy subscription box (if not best sub box in ALL categories) that I've ever reviewed! This enormous "circus in a box" arrived on my doorstep just five days after ordering. The concept here is unlike any other. Each month, they send 30 candies in individual portion controlled packages, all centered around a fun theme.  For your first month, you will receive the "Around the World in 30 Sweets Box", a jaw dropping assortment of international treats!

The cost of a 30 Days of Candy box is $29.95 plus $5.95 for shipping via FedEx.  They do not offer discounts for longer term subscriptions.  Shipping to Canada is a flat $21.70 per box.

Let's explore what arrived under the red and white striped Big Top!  This whopping big box is 20 inches in length and weighs a bit over two and a half pounds.  As you can see, I had trouble fitting it all into one picture.

Things get quite exciting when the lid goes up! There is an amazing panoply of stripes and 30 individually packaged candies plus a bonus item.  This is, without a doubt, the most colorful and FUN subscription box presentation ever!

Across the top of the box is a printed banner announcing the theme, "Around the World in 30 Sweets!", with silhouettes of lots of famous buildings.

Here are all the candy bags laid out; the stripes reflect the colors of the represented country's flag.  Each pack shows the country and its flag on the front and has a card inside which gives a brief story or description plus a calorie count (about 100 calories per bag).  As if that weren't enough, each card also has a thought provoking quote by a famous personality from the featured country.

First is a bonus item...a cute Donald Duck Pez dispenser with two packs of Pez inside. From Austria, there are three packages of Pez in grape, raspberry and cherry. Did you know that Pez originated in Vienna in 1927?  I sure didn't!

Since there is such an overwhelming amount of candy (not to mention, a LOT of packaging) in this box, I thought I'd break them up into groups of five so you can get a better look.  The back sides of the packages are shown so you can see what's inside.  From left to right and top to bottom, we have:

Indonesia - Milkita, milky hard candies in strawberry, chocolate and melon
Malaysia - Okio Gummies in grape, strawberry and orange
Latvia - Laima hazelnut and praline chocolates
U.S.A. - Bit-O-Honey (the recipe has remained unchanged for 90 years!)

Poland - Solidarnosc cream fudge (refers to the Solidarity Confection Co., NOT the political movement!)
Japan - Aha!  The famous green tea KitKat bar!
Thailand - Kopiko coffee candy, 4 or 5 pieces have the caffeine content of one cup of coffee
Switzerland - Milka "Milkinis" milk chocolate bars
Morocco - Fresch, candies with hard outer shells and chewy mint or fruit centers

Turkey - Haribo Gold-Bears gummies (who knew these came from Turkey?)
Germany - Hirsch Fruit Basket taffies from the Black Forest region, very fruity and very chewy
Netherlands - Perfetti van Melle, eggnog toffees based on a Dutch drink called Advocaat
Russia - Milk chocolate almond praline wafers are called Mishka Kosolapy (clumsy bear)
Canada - Oakleaf Confections purchased the Sixlets brand from Hershey's in 2003. (I haven't had these since I was a kid and there truly were six in a pack!  Guess inflation hit in a good way; there are eight per pack now.)

Ireland - The Jelly Bean Factory, lots of assorted flavors!
Colombia - Colombina chocolate filled caramels
Sweden - Mondelez International, Daim, a crunchy almond butter toffee bar covered in milk chocolate
France - Maison Pecou, Jordan almonds, one of the oldest candies in the world
China - ABC Candy Company (called Mickey Mouse Sweets before the Communist Revolution), creamy milk-flavored taffies have an edible inside wrapper made of rice paper

Singapore - Meiji, Hello Panda chocolate creme-filled cookies (easily available on Amazon; don't ask me how I know this)
England - Walkers "Nonsuch" English cream toffee
Belgium - Napoleon bonbons, a hard candy with a sour center
Italy - Perugina, Spicchi di Sorrento (wedges of Sorrento), lemon, orange and tangerine hard candies
Ukraine - Roshen Confections, a stiff gummy exterior with a jelly center, flavors include cherry, orange, strawberry, lemon, grapefruit and cranberry

Taiwan - Hi-Chews, the ubiquitous chewy fruity candy that comes in zillions of flavors
Finland - Fazer, Marianne mints have a hard peppermint shell with either a creamy caramel center or a creamy chocolate center
Hong Kong - Garden brand, strawberry flavor with a hard outer shell and a soft taffy center. Traditional Chinese New Year good luck candy.
Norway - Seriously strong licorice caramels (Even if you offer me a free trip to Norway, I will not eat these!)
Argentina - Arcor, fruit flavored taffy candies

The flip side of the banner in this month's box gives a colorful pictorial representation of what we can expect in next month's box.  The theme will be "30 candies with delicious, albeit unusual flavors".  There are indeed some odd things pictured; a few that I recognize are rhubarb, pancakes (PANCAKES?), serrano peppers, star anise, a pickle and absinth. Yep....July's box is going to be interesting!

There aren't enough superlatives to describe this 30 Days of Candy box!  The intriguing concept, amazing curation and spectacular custom packaging set this subscription pretty much above and beyond any other that I've tried.  The visual appeal is undeniable, the candy is delicious and the touches of history and notable quotes are fun extras!

If you're interested in trying 30 Days of Candy (how could you NOT be?), use code FREESHIPTX when checking out for free shipping on your first box.  Please Note:  This promotion is good for U.S. shipments only and expires at midnight on June 30, 2015.

It is hard to imagine how 30 Days of Candy is going to top or even match this box in the future.  Whether they manage to do that or not, the "Around the World in 30 Sweets" box significantly raises the bar....sub box competitors should take note!

Thanks for reading,

Cheryl

Target Beauty Box Review, Summer 2015

It's really interesting to note how some of the big box retailers are jumping on the subscription box bandwagon, particularly in the HBA category.  Walmart and Target are in a dead heat with their quarterly boxes and I think it's fairly safe to assume we'll be seeing other retailers at least toying with this concept.  At $7.00, Target's Beauty Box is $2 more than Walmart's box but I'd say the overall retail values and product mix are similar. Target has recently changed their packaging to a sleek black box that has a bit more upscale appeal.

The Summer box is now sold out, but of course, Target would like you to know that all these products are available individually on their site.  So, I will include the retail prices in case you're interested.  This box contained five items, three of which appear to be full sized and two which look like luxury samples.  They also included a $3 off coupon for any beauty purchase of $15 or more, which is a nice perk.

This lipstick is from Revlon's new Ultra HD line which uses a wax-free gel technology to produce true color clarity.  This line comes in 20 shades; I received #875, "Gladiolus", an intense red shade.  Not sure I can pull off such a strong color so this may get gifted.  Retail $7.99

The second item is a package of three nail polish remover pads from Cutex.  These strengthen and condition and contain botanical oils.  A 10-count package is $3.99 so I estimate the retail value of this at about $1.20.

There is a 2 oz. sample of Fekkai's Brilliant Glossing Styling Creme.  This salon-quality product contains olive oil which leaves hair sleek and shiny.  Since this is exactly half the size of the full size version which retails for $19.99, I estimate its value at $10.00.

This nail polish from Sinful Colors is in the shade 1122, Energetic Red.  This is a strong red with a bit of pink to it.  (Much stronger color than the photo shows!)  I took an instant dislike to this shade so it will be going elsewhere.  At a retail value of $1.99, I don't think I'm missing out!

The last item is my favorite, a dark circle correcting eye cream from Olay Regenerist. This comes with a pump applicator in a see-through bottle. There is a cool "hydraswirl" inside which is said to instantly hydrate the eye area and reduce the appearance of dark circles. It sure gets points for great packaging! Even better, it's full size!  Retail $23.99

There's really no question about the incredible value of this box.  The Olay eye cream alone is worth more than THREE times what I paid!  Altogether, the total retail value (including the coupon) is about $48.17.  The only disappointing product to me is the nail polish but since it has the least value, I'm certainly not complaining.  Eye creams are expensive which makes me reluctant to try new ones so I'm especially happy to try the new Olay product.

It isn't clear yet how committed Target is to its Beauty Box program.  These boxes have been around for about a year now and I assume the next one will arrive in late August.  Keep an eye on my Facebook page for a heads up when the next box is available for purchase. Word to the wise...drop everything and GO when you get the word; these boxes sell out very quickly.  Target's Beauty Boxes have been consistently good and are well worth stalking!

Thanks for reading,

Cheryl

P.S.  Target also had a Father's Day box for just $5.00.  It too sold out quickly but is evidence that they are experimenting with this type of marketing...another reason to keep an eye out for their new boxes!

Square Hue Nail Polish Subscription Review, June 2015 + FREE Surprise Box Code!

It's rare for a subscription company to choose an annual theme...then stick with it for an entire year! But with its ambitious "Decades" collection, that's exactly what Square Hue has done.  I've been looking forward to the June box since it's now time for the 1950's. Square Hue did a great job of capturing the upbeat mood of this fun and happy post-war decade in the three beautiful shades subscribers received this month.

To quickly take care of business, Square Hue is $14.99 per month plus $5.00 for shipping ($9.00 for Canada).  You get three premium nail polishes each month.  If you order now, you'll get the July box which will celebrate the 1960's.  (For some reason, "The Mod Squad" immediately leaps to mind!)

Here are the colors from the June box; bright, cheery and fun!  They have started including a card where you can swatch the colors in case you want to catalog the enormous nail polish collection you are amassing with this subscription!

You can see the shades better by looking at the backs of the bottles.  I really think the '50's trio is my favorite yet.  (I know--I've said that before, but I really mean it this time!)

Here are color swatches for all three polishes.  These are all high gloss creme shades.

From left to right, first is Palm Springs, circa 1950.  This may be the prettiest green nail polish shade I've come across.  (I want an accent wall in my house to be this color!)
Second is Bel Air, circa 1957, clearly a reference to the coolest car of the decade. This classic aqua blue makes me think of American Graffiti and all the cars parked at Mel's Drive-In. Third is Sock Hop, circa 1958.  This reminds me of the ultimate cool girl, Pinky Tuscadero and all things "Grease".

I'd be hard pressed to choose a favorite from this group but if I had to, it would be the green....such an unusual and beautiful color and it inspires me beyond just the ends of my fingers!  All in all, this was a great collection and I think Square Hue did an amazing job of capturing the feel of the '50's via color.

If you're interested in trying Square Hue, use code surprise14 for a free box when you subscribe.  I believe that signing up for their newsletter will also get you the free box.

Let the polishing begin!

Cheryl

Serendipity by Little Lace Box Review, June 2015

Since Little Lace Box changed to a bi-monthly subscription service in April, I certainly wasn't expecting anything from them in early June.  Then, out of the blue, a red metallic bubble mailer arrived containing a few completely unexpected items.  An enclosed letter introduced this little windfall as "Serendipity from LLB", meaning an unforeseen nice surprise. That it certainly was!

The letter went on to explain that these items are things that don't exactly fit the theme of the current Little Lace Box or that they couldn't get enough of to fulfill their quantity needs. So they decided to introduce a pouch containing 5 to 7 sample or full size items that are nice to have, but not themed in any way.  The plan is to send out "Serendipity by LLB" on the Little Lace Box off-months.  The best part of this is that there is no cost to current LLB subscribers!  It sounds like they do plan to charge for this new service eventually but for the time being, we should just relax and enjoy our good fortune!

OK, thank you LLB, I'm on board!  Let's see what Serendipity brought this month.  First is a full size lip liner from Ofra in a deep plum shade.  I will save this for the fall but it is a lovely color. (Retail $12.95)

This very dark looking lip gloss is also from Ofra in the shade "Bordeaux", which perfectly matches the lip liner.  This gives a sheer, non-sticky color and is also a full size product. (Retail $12.95)

A third cosmetic from Ofra is this eyebrow pencil which is in a "Universal" color that works for any eyebrow shade. Eyebrow pencils haven't been common in subscription boxes so I'm glad to get this one. (Retail $12.95)

There is a two capsule sample of Brode Electrolyte Vitamins, whose purpose is to replace lost electrolytes and maintain hydration.  These are recommended for situations where you can get dehydrated, like riding in airplane cabins, exercising or drinking alcohol.

They included a really cute greeting card from Bella Ink with the modestly stated sentiment "You are pretty much my most favorite of all time in the history of forever" on the front!  I bet we all know someone who should receive a card like this from us.

That's all in the Serendipity pouch.  Since the three cosmetic items alone are worth $38.85 and I paid NOTHING, this is pretty much the ultimate subscription perk.  I don't know how much longer Little Lace Box can keep this up but I'm guessing they won't get a single complaint about this one!

If you want to get in on Serendipity by LLB while it lasts, check out their site here. Since Serendipity is a benefit of a subscription to Little Lace Box, you won't see a place to sign up for it specifically, but you can purchase the individual products included in this pouch.  The theme for the upcoming Little Lace Box is "Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy", which refers to Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice".  In a screen obsessed culture, I think it will be interesting to see how Little Lace Box interprets this most classic of literature!

Orange Glad Sweet Box Gourmet Desserts Review, June 2015 + $10 Discount Code!

The only food box I've found that consistently sends quality artisan sweets and baked desserts is Orange Glad.  This one presents a bit of a "happy problem" for me. Fresh baked foods deteriorate quickly. They can't just wait around in one's snack pipeline. (The information brochure even provides a "Best by date" for each item; most are less than two weeks, a few must be eaten within a couple of days.)  They also can't wait for the next box full of treats being shipped off to family members in other cities.  Poor me!

Believe it or not, this photo is positioned absolutely straight on the page.  Interesting optical illusion, huh?

If you check some of my old Orange Glad reviews, you can see that their boxes have gotten much smaller over the past few months.  The box above is probably half the size of the original Orange Glad box.  Those were beautifully packaged but did contain a lot of filler material which I'm sure was expensive to ship.  You get about the same amount of product now; it's just more compactly boxed.

A full color brochure tells everything you'd want to know about each product, including how soon you need to eat it. The "Sweet Box" on the left contains three baked items, one of which we've seen before.

The repeat is the "Luscious Lemon Bar" from the Fine Sconehenge Baking Co. in Camarillo, CA.  This decadent lemony bar is made from all natural ingredients with no preservatives.  It first appeared in Orange Glad's June 2014 box. This is one of those things that has to be consumed immediately.  I'll take one for the team!

Next is a package containing three Raspberry-Matcha cookie sandwiches from The Baking Bean in Brooklyn, NY.  The cookie pairs are very thin with pieces of raspberries in them and a matcha green tea ganache in the center.  Very interesting flavor combination!

The third baked good is a package of two Italian Jelly Filled Linzer from Cookies con Amore in Vista, CA.  These very delicate buttery cookies contain notes of vanilla and almond and have a delicious strawberry (raspberry?) filling.  I'm not normally a fan of jams and jellies used in baking but these are absolutely delicious.

Although I like them, I'm getting a little tired of caramels in sub boxes.  I get it...they're durable, easily available, won't fall apart during shipping and aren't subject to fast expiration.  And most people like them!  Enough whining.  This little box contains four Salted Beer & Pretzel Caramels from Becky's Blissful Bakery in Pewaukee, WI.  These soft vanilla caramels are infused with organic beer and pretzel pieces, then topped with a sprinkle of sea salt (another thing I'm tired of when it comes to candy and sweets). Despite my complaining, these are spectacular caramels!

The piece de resistance in this box is definitely the Cookies & Cream Crispycake from The Crispery in Little Rock, AR.  (The information leaflet says this is in AK but I don't think this store even exists in that state.)  This thing is a Rice Krispy treat on steroids! It's about 3.5" square and 2" tall, a real whopper! In the center is a layer of crushed chocolate sandwich cookies with a whole one embedded in the top. Beyond sinful!

That's all for June's Orange Glad box. The Sweet Box is $15 per month plus $4 shipping. A better deal is their Double Box for $27 plus $4 shipping. You will have an opportunity to indicate flavor preferences to help them curate your box but I don't think there are any guarantees. They ship during the first week of each month so if you sign up now, you'll get July's box. If interested, click here for a $10 discount on a new subscription.

Orange Glad also has a wonderful Marketplace that carries all the items mentioned in this review plus MANY more from past boxes. Use code SHOPSWEET for a 15% discount there.

Thanks for reading,

Cheryl

Bare Minerals Bare Escentuals Beauty Surprise Collection Review, May 2015

Every once in a while, Bare Minerals (or "bareMinerals", as they like to be called) makes a mystery beauty collection available.  The value is typically quite high compared to the price so it is well worth keeping an eye out for this promotion.  I'm not sure whether to call this a bareMinerals promotion or a bareEscentuals promotion as I've never clearly understood the relationship between those two. Suffice it to say, those two names are closely linked.

Judging from the timing of other reviews, it looks like these boxes come out roughly two or three times a year.  The most recent one was priced at $45 with a retail value of $188.  We were told only that it would be an 11 pc. collection.  With a value multiple like that, it isn't surprising that the mystery boxes sell out within a few hours.  If you want to be at the head of the line for the next box, I strongly advise signing up for their e-mail list

I think of bareMinerals as a mid-range cosmetic line.  Since I'm much more likely to pick up inexpensive drug store brands, the cost of their products usually scares me away.  But taking advantage of the opportunity to get 11 mostly full-sized items for $45 is a no brainer.  So, here's what was in the May box:

This collection seemed to be more about subtlety and definition and less about intense or bold color.  Sometimes beauty surprise boxes contain pretty strange or "out there" products; happily that was not the case here.  The first product is a gorgeous luminizer duo.  This is from their "Ready" line and contains the shades "The Love Affair" and "The Shining Moment". These shades are very natural and contain just a hint of shimmer.  (Retail $24)

Next is the 5-in-1 BB Advanced Performance Mineral Veil Finishing Powder with SPF 20.  At .21 oz., this one is a bit smaller than full size but still enough to last me a very long time. It is a sheer and finely milled powder with a sifting tray to make sure you get the finest possible consistency.  The one I received is transparent with just a hint of warm pink. (Retail about $21)

This is a full size "Big & Bright" eyeliner in the shade "Espresso".  This is a creamy eyeliner pencil that glides on smoothly and has a smudge tip on one end. (Retail $14)

One product I'd never heard of is the "Skin Rev-er Upper" from bareVitamins.  This is used underneath foundation to create the smoothest possible surface.  It works like a daily multivitamin supplement to rejuvenate skin.  This one is a luxury sample size so the price is an estimate.  (Retail $9)

This double ended tool has a buffer brush on one end and a concealer brush on the other. The compact size would make this great for travel and the two brush shapes would take care of most face needs, except for applying eyeshadow.  I believe I have received this same brush 2 or 3 times in various subscription boxes! (Estimated retail is $18)

There are two "Whipped Velvet" cream eyeshadows in the box; one is in the shade "Deep Sky" and the other is "Rich Olive".  These are rich and creamy matte eyeshadows that were introduced last fall.  They are said to have a velvety mousse-like texture that is easy to blend. (Estimated retail $14 x 2 = $28)

bareMinerals is known for their gorgeous sleek black cases.  There were two of them in this box; the Luminizer Duo above and this translucent Touch Up Veil with SPF 15 from their "Ready" line. The idea is to diffuse imperfections and reduce shine, leaving an airbrushed finish. This sample size would be great for on-the-go corrections. (Estimated retail $10)

This lipstick in its stunning brushed gold case was somewhat of an enigma to me.  I could not get the thing open!  Finally figured out you have to press on the button, then push down...a lipstick case mechanism I've never encountered before.  Out popped this universally flattering shade of pink called "Dim the Lights" from their "Marvelous Moxie" collection. (Retail $18)

This gold topped pot contains a very silky and lightweight mineral blush in a pretty pink shade called "Sweet Romance".  (Retail $20)

The last product is Natural Light Face Lifting Duo which contains two finely milled translucent mineral powders designed for highlighting and lifting.  "Well-Lit" diffuses shadows and "Back-Lit" lifts the eye area above the brows and high on the cheeks. Great excuse to brush up on contouring skills! (Retail $26)

In doing the research for this post, I found that none of these products are currently available on the bareMinerals website nor most of their retail outlets. The eyeshadows were clearly last season's colors so I'm guessing that bareMinerals uses the Surprise Box to clear out any remaining past season stock.  In this case, that means getting $188 worth of product for just $45 so I'm not complaining!  With the exception of the two eyeshadows, I think all these products are appropriate for year-round use.

One thing I liked about this box was being introduced to some state of the art cosmetic technology via a couple of new-to-me product types, like the Luminizer Duo and the Touch Up Veil.  Due to lack of familiarity, these are products I probably would not have purchased on my own so this is a great way to try them out.

Don't forget to put your name on bareEscentuals mailing list so you'll be the first to hear when the next Surprise Box becomes available.  If the past is any indicator, we can probably expect one in the fall.

Thanks for reading,

Cheryl
