Birchbox "Power Pose" Box Review, October 2015

With all the options available through Birchbox these days, I am rarely able to remember which box I chose by the time it arrives.  Even though I faithfully make "the choice" when prompted every month, I'm always completely surprised by the contents when the box actually lands on my doorstep.  In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month (October), Birchbox partnered with The Estee Lauder Companies to provide two featured boxes in addition to their regular box. Somehow I managed to remember that I chose the "Power Pose" box this time.

There is a LOT of pink in this box including a pink breast cancer lapel ribbon. Inside the box are five good sized samples from several Estee Lauder brands. This is NOT your mother's Estee Lauder.  Today, the cosmetic behemoth encompasses an astonishing array of iconic brands like Bobbi Brown, Bumble & Bumble, Clinique, DKNY, Glamglow, Jo Malone, La Mer, MAC, Michael Kors, Origins, Prescriptives, Smashbox, Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger and Tory Burch, to name just a few. The products in this box represent four of those brands, making it one of the highest value (and most welcome) Birchboxes I've received to date.

There is a pink card with breast cancer detection and prevention tips plus some notes about Birchbox and Estee Lauder's commitment to supporting The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  They didn't forget the pink ribbon either!

The information card gives a quick overview of each product including its price in the full size.  That's important for this particular box as a few of the samples are pretty high end.

Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum is a staple in their gift with purchase bags. It's also a great product so I was glad to get this one.  In the past, I've always seen it in a cream form, but this is actually in a tiny pump spray bottle that looks like a perfume.  (Full size $65)

This Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Mega Melon is a great versatile shade that should look good on almost anyone.  I've been a slow convert to chubby stick lip colors but I've come to really like them since accumulating several through subscription boxes.  (Full size $17)

Another product from Clinique is a sample of their Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief. I'm not familiar with this product but it's a lightweight pink gel that soothes, cools and plumps skin. This can be applied over or under makeup or as a five minute moisture mask. (Full size $39)

From Smashbox, we have the Photo Finish Foundation Primer which is meant to be worn alone or under foundation to create a flawless finish.  This one has appeared in a number of beauty boxes this year. I'm not convinced that it really does anything but when I have the time, I'll give it a try. (Full size $36)

In the category of "things I would never try outside of a subscription box" is this sample of Darphin's Stimulskin Plus Multi-Corrective Divine Cream.  This luxurious formula is said to soften lines, firm and brighten.  At $295 in the full size, it should take out the trash and rotate the tires on my car as well!

Not bad for a $10 beauty box, huh?  To be honest, I had been getting a little bored with Birchbox.  As the beauty box pioneer, it felt like they were topped out and just didn't have much more to offer long time subscribers.  The aggressive roll-out this year of the featured and limited edition box options that make high end products like these available really demonstrates their commitment to evolving and staying at the head of the pack. That Birchbox is able to partner with companies like Estee Lauder is even further testament to their market muscle and a very good reason to keep an eye on this box!

Now is a great time to check out Birchbox if you haven't already.  They also have a terrific points system that awards a point for every dollar spent.  It doesn't take long for those points to add up.  When they do, there is a incredible array of products in their store, any of which can be purchased with points.

As always, thank you for reading!

Cheryl
