GradBin Build A Box (One Time Purchase) Review + 25% Discount Code!

Do you ever find that you like the concept of a subscription service but wish you could pick and choose the specific items in the box?  Or have you considered gifting a box but don't want to commit to a subscription? One service that offers this flexibility is GradBin, a fun new college subscription service. (If you missed my December review, click here to catch up!)

Besides the regular monthly service, GradBin also offers a "build your own box" option which allows you to select items from their Grad Shop, fill your own box and ship it off to your favorite college student.  College students are a transient population, so timing is a factor in anything you send.  If it's nearing the end of a semester, a one time build your own box may make more sense than a subscription.

The Grad Shop is stocked up with all sorts of treats, necessities and gifts such as granola, journals, beef jerky, note pads, chocolate and laundry supplies.  It's fun and easy to come up with your own mix of items that would appeal to your college student (or inner college student)! The items are all priced individually with most ranging from $2.95 to $9.95.

I recently had the opportunity to build my own GradBin.  The box is just like their subscription box except I knew what was inside before I opened it!

You can build your own box to any size.  I chose five items, two of which I've tried before (and loved!) and three that were new to me.

GradBin has the cutest ceramic logo mug and spoon set.  This pair is very well made with the orange spoon color coordinating with the interior of the mug.  There are slots in the handle to hold the spoon when it's not in use.

Another item I chose was a trio of Starbucks Refreshers Via Instant packets in Very Berry Hibiscus flavor. This is a delicious fruity drink made with green coffee extract and served cold with ice. The Grad Shop also has this available in Valencia Orange flavor.

I picked a green sticky note reminder pad with "TMI" at the top, plenty of space for my scribbles and a tiny check box at the bottom with "but thanks for sharing" next to it. This is cute and would be useful for anyone.  Just might keep it myself.

This packet of Granola Lab granola looks absolutely delicious!  It's called "Activation Energy" and contains coffee, dark chocolate and hazelnuts.  This has got to be the ultimate study snack.

My last item is another decadent treat, a package of Simply Salted Caramels from The Caramel House.  These are very tasty and with their pretty packaging, would make a wonderful addition to a gift box.

There is a small shipping fee for build a boxes that varies by the combined weight of the items you choose.  (They make every effort to keep shipping as low as possible; they want to keep your business!)

GradBin also offers several pre-built boxes which can be purchased in their shop on a one time basis.  These have different themes and sell for $24.95.  At the moment, they have a BusyBin, a FreshBin and a SweetBin.  You can also purchase the current month's box by itself if you like. There is a (very reasonable) $3.95 shipping fee for each of these boxes.

The GradBin products that I've tried have all been of very good quality, the edibles have been delicious and the other items were useful and well made. The a la carte items are updated every couple of weeks and they do go out of stock pretty quickly so if you see something you want, better grab it while you can.

If you would like to build your own GradBin, use code LONESTAR for a 25% discount on pre-built or subscription boxes.  The code also works for build your own boxes of $20 or more. It goes without saying that these boxes are fun for anyone, not just college students!

Thanks for reading,

Cheryl

P.S.  GradBin now offers two subscription box sizes, the original with 5 to 7 items ($24.95 + $3.95 shipping) and the mini with 3 to 5 items ($19.95 + $3.95 shipping).

Nadine West Risk Free Personal Styling Service Review, February 2016

The appeal of personal styling subscription services seems to be growing.  Most of them have you complete an extensive profile indicating your preferences and dislikes. Over time, your personal stylist gets to know you and sends clothing and accessories that meet your requirements.  There may or may not be a nominal styling fee. You return the things you don't want and pay only for the items you keep.  It's a seductive premise...after all, who wouldn't want somebody else (presumably more qualified) to do the fashion legwork for you?  But there are risks. The return time can be very short (as little as 3 days with some services) and if you miss the deadline, you can be stuck with some shockingly high charges.

The styling service with the least risk that I've found is Nadine West. They typically send a top or scarf plus a couple of pieces of jewelry or accessories based on your profile choices.  I first tried them a while back when they were quite new.  Although I liked the items they sent, I felt there were quality issues so did not continue.  Fast forward two years and it was time to give them another try.  I started over with a new profile and had my hot pink metallic mailer in less than a week!

The only upfront charge is $6.50 which is debited to your account and applied to the cost of anything you keep.  If you return everything, you forfeit the $6.50.  Since there is no styling fee with Nadine West, I thought this was completely fair.

My pink bag for February contained a top, a pair of earrings and a necklace.  I was a little concerned about the top because the fabric is quite thin but it fits me well and looks pretty good on.  I especially like the long sleeves with dropped shoulders. I don't normally buy horizontal stripes (doesn't that break a fashion rule?) but somehow, this works!  And the color is so versatile; it will go with anything in the black, white, red or gray category.  The price to keep this is $24.49.  Verdict:  KEEP!

The jewelry was packaged in pink organza drawstring bags and wrapped in hot pink tissue paper.

First was the Shape of Love pendant necklace.  This is a sparkly rhinestone studded heart on a thin chain.  It is delicate and pretty but I have a couple of other necklaces like it and it just isn't a piece I need.  The price to keep this is $22.49. Verdict:  RETURN!

This pair of square shaped studs has smoky gray crystals that pair beautifully with the top. Although I have a LOT of earrings in my collection, I have nothing like these. They are nicely made and provide some subtle sparkle.  The price to keep these is $11.99.  Verdict:  KEEP!

One thing I really like about Nadine West is that their item prices range from $7 to $35 with an average price of $18, making them a quite affordable personal styling option. Another thing I like is that they give you a reasonable amount of time to try the items before returning the ones you don't want.  My return date was a generous 21 days after receipt...a good two weeks longer than I've had with other styling services. (They send a pre-paid shipping label with your order so there is no postage cost to return.)

Nadine West encourages a lot of communication with the idea that the more information and feedback you provide, the more likely you'll love your items.  Keep in mind that the items I received are most likely NOT the items you will receive.  They closely reflect the preferences I indicated and I thought Nadine West did an excellent job of sending things appropriate for my age, tastes and lifestyle.

There really isn't much risk in trying Nadine West. There is no monthly styling fee. At best, you'll enjoy the process and end up with some items you like.  At worst, you'll lose $6.50 if you return everything.  I don't know of any subscription service in any category with such a low downside!

Thanks for reading,

Cheryl

Book Review: The Verdict, A Novel by Nick Stone

Vernon James is in a lot of trouble.  The multimillionaire hedge fund manager has been arrested and charged with the murder of a woman who was found in his hotel room the night after he received the prestigious "Ethical Person of the Year" award. Terry Flynt is a legal clerk assigned to his defense team.  That's a problem since Terry has a history with Vernon and despises him as a result.  (Short version---They went to law school together, Vernon accused Terry of theft and got him kicked out, then married the girl Terry loved.) Vernon may well be innocent but he is not a nice person and that results in some interesting moral dilemmas for Terry.

'The Verdict" by Nick Stone is a 500 page legal thriller that kept me riveted from start to finish. Aside from the many plot twists and turns, this story provides a fascinating look inside the British legal system.  With practices and traditions rooted in the early 19th century, the justice process works quite differently than it does in the U.S. Solicitors perform the investigation and barristers present the case in court.  Clerks do all the legwork.  The court structure is different, the barristers and judge wear wigs, the defendant sits in a "dock" above the jury, sometimes archaic forms of address are employed, etc.

Nick Stone has been called London's John Grisham.  The legal thriller genre certainly begs the comparison but I found this book to be on a different intellectual level than the average Grisham novel.  My tendency to speed read may be the reason but I found some of the plot tangents to be confusing and the book just too long. Fortunately, one doesn't have to connect all the dots to enjoy this story; the flawlessly presented drama of the courtroom trial is the primary appeal. If you're looking to dig into a substantial and engrossing murder mystery/legal thriller, "The Verdict" is a great choice!

Terra Bella Box (Bath & Beauty Products) Review, February 2016

One of my favorite box categories is bath & body; this just seems to be an area that lends itself well to subcommerce.  Narrowing the genre even further brings us to Terra Bella Box which sends all natural handmade products. Terra Bella Boxes may include things for face, body, bath or hair with an occasional cosmetic thrown in for good measure.

Terra Bella Box is available in two sizes, Lite and Full Size. The Lite box contains 2 or 3 products and the Full Size box contains 5 or 6 products. I believe all items are full or deluxe sample sizes.  Several pre-pay options are available with discounts for longer terms:

Terra Bella Lite

Monthly - $16.95
3 Mos. - $50.85
6 Mos. - $101.72
Annual - $203.40

Terra Bella Full Size

Monthly - $34.95
3 Mos. - $104.86
6 Mos. - $203.70
Annual - $395.45

Under the "Shop" tab, they also have single purchase boxes.  Right now, there is a Valentine's Day box for $25.00, a Bridesmaid Box for $30.00 to $35.00 and a Trial Box for $24.00.

My Terra Bella Box usually arrives during the second week of the month.  February's box contained five interesting looking items including one that looked good enough to eat!

There were several cards enclosed.  The sentiment on this one is something we all need to remember!

The product card tells about each item, gives its retail price and provides a website address where you can buy more or check out other items by these vendors. This is information I especially appreciate when it comes to small batch vendors.

The first item is, without a doubt, my favorite!  It's a cupcake-shaped bubble bar and bath bomb.  The white frosting on the top is the bubble bar and the chocolate cupcake base is a moisturizing bath bomb that contains Dead Sea salts and Sweet Almond Oil.  I already love this and can't wait to try it!

The cupcake comes from an Etsy vendor called Country Market Crafts.  A card was included giving the code TERRABELLA10 to use for 10% off any purchase in her Etsy shop. I've checked out this shop and there are a lot of decadent looking bath and body products that look to be the same quality as Lush....but are MUCH more reasonably priced!

Next is a 4 oz. spray pump bottle of Lottie's Body Oil from QC Naturals.  This is sitting on a paper towel in the photo because it leaked a bit in the box.  It can be applied post-shower for maximum hydration, on-the-go as a moisturizer, used as a massage oil or added to your bath.

This is a roll-on bottle of Cinnamon Lip Plumper from Whiskey & Lace.  The cinnamon oil helps bring blood to your lips making them appear fuller and plumper. The instructions say not to use this on a daily basis as your skin will become immune. I've seen these products before and must admit, I've been afraid to try them. But I decided to take one for the team. This has a strong red hot taste to it.  Within a minute of application, my lips were stinging so badly, I had to rinse it off.  I suspect the effect varies from person to person but for me, the pain is not worth the result!

This cute tin contains Zum Rub Moisturizer in Lavender from Indigo Wild (isn't that a great name?)  This is a goat's milk and shea butter moisturizer that can be used on any part of your body that needs moisturizing.  For me, right now, that is elbows...so that's where it will go.

The final item is a spray pump bottle of Breath Atomizer from Miss Violet Lace.  This subtle breath freshener is strawberry-scented and made from 100% natural ingredients.  I don't remember ever receiving a product of this type in a sub box before.

What did you think of February's Terra Bella Box?  For me, the clear winner was the bubble bath bomb cupcake!  There is enough Zum Rub and body oil to last me a long time. Unfortunately, I'm just not enough of a die-hard beauty junkie to suffer for plump lips via the Cinnamon Lip Plumper.  (I'm really curious to hear what others have to say about this product.)

As always, Terra Bella sent an interesting mix of items and introduced us to some new small batch vendors.  The products are all top quality and came in generous sizes. I'll definitely be checking out the featured Etsy vendor so keep an eye out for that upcoming review!

Cheryl

5 Wacky Women Surprise Box Review, February 2016

Check out the 5 Wacky Women website and you'll find some very happy women behind this new subscription box! The Surprise box is an extension of their brick and mortar store in Cockeysville, Maryland which is known for hand selected gifts for self and home. Each month, they send four to six unique products for $34.95 plus shipping. Since I'd read some great reviews about this box, I thought it was time to check them out.

My first box arrived very quickly after ordering, just about a week later.  The fun was apparent in this lime green polka dotted box with their logo on one side.

Here's a first look inside.  Information card on top, some green crinkle shreds and an intriguing heart shape!

The welcome card introduces February's theme "Celebrate Love" and lists the products on the back.

There are four items in the box. The quality of each was immediately apparent.

This is a journal with a faux patent leather cover and beautiful details inside. "Hello Gorgeous" is embossed in gold on the front cover. Inside both covers is a cute fox print on green cardstock and there is an adorable little gold fox charm on a green ribbon to use as a bookmark. The pages are all ruled with aqua lines and there is a mermaid logo at the bottom of each page.

Just in time for Valentine's Day is this heavy silver heart-shaped bowl from Inspired Generations.  The outside is a highly polished food safe aluminum and the inside is coated so that it won't etch with acidic foods.  This serving bowl measures about 6 inches in diameter; the perfect size for serving nuts, candies or other snacks.

This "Love Knot" spoon goes with the heart dish.  It, too, is quite heavy for its size and is highly polished.  The two together would make a wonderful gift!

Last is this delicious bag of sea salt caramels from Mouth Party. These are made in Baltimore and contain only five ingredients.  Pure deliciousness and half gone now!

I loved the selection of items in February's box!  I thought the 5 Wacky Women ladies did an excellent job of picking things that would bring a smile to most women's faces.  I particularly liked the unusual heart bowl and spoon combination; the quality is amazing. Everything is gift quality and the curation is top notch!

The one thing that stressed me about this box was the high shipping cost.  $11.70 is the most I've ever paid to have a subscription box shipped. The fact that I'm in TX and the box is shipped from MD is the culprit.  Subscription companies usually bury some part of the shipping in the cost of the box and/or pass on the savings they get from using commercial rates but I definitely paid full blown retail shipping on this one. If you live closer to MD, the postage sting won't be as bad but customers further away will feel the pain. Although I can't wait to see what comes in the next box, the high cost of shipping will limit the time I can stay with this subscription.

Be sure to check out the 5 Wacky Women shop on-line; it's full of wonderful items you probably haven't seen before.  If you sign up using your e-mail address, you'll receive a 10% discount code.  I'm not sure if this can be used on the Surprise box but it should be good for anything in their store.

Cheryl

Aster Market Subscription Review, February 2016 + 20% Discount Code!

My favorite subscription boxes are those that feel like a close friend put them together just for you. PopSugar is the undisputed queen of that genre but there are some runners up worth mentioning. A new box that fits the "best friend" category comes from Aster Market which sends carefully chosen small batch items from home decor to paper goods to bath products, jewelry and other items.

At $46.95 per month (somewhat less per month if you pre-pay for a three or six month term), this is not an inexpensive box. The site says that each box will include two or more full size products with a total retail value of $50 or more. Considering what other boxes in this price range offer, that did not inspire a lot of enthusiasm.  But let's see what came in my first box.

Within a week of placing my order, I received a medium sized white box via USPS Priority mail.  A big logo sticker was wrapped over one side with "The box that complements your everyday!" on one end.

Everything inside was neatly packaged in tissue and tied with string.  (This same type of striped cotton string has oddly appeared in a LOT of sub boxes. The string salesman must be working overtime!)

A card lists the four products in the box on one side and shows the charities they support on the other side. (A word here about charities. When signing up for Aster Market, you are asked to indicate one of six charities that will receive 25% of the net proceeds from your purchase. That might explain the high price of this box. Noble though their philanthropic efforts may be, I don't feel it's the business of a subscription company to allocate MY dollars to charitable causes. I am quite capable of directing my own charitable contributions and would prefer that businesses just stick to providing a product or service. Yes, I am an unapologetic capitalist!)

Here's an overview of the items in the box; all are clearly artful in some way.

First is a large clear glass mug with the hand lettered inscription "throw kindness around like confetti" written in gold cursive on one side. While I'm not blown away by this mug, I don't have another one like it so it will go into my regular mug rotation. This comes from an Etsy vendor and retails for about $16.

Next is a package of three pencils with "Dream Big, Darling" engraved in gold letters on each one. These are cute but at a retail price of $8, it's hard to take the value seriously.

There are six beautifully packaged greeting cards with hand lettered love messages.   These are from a seller who sells 3 for $10 in her Etsy store so these are worth about $20.  I thought these notes were a very good choice for this box.

They come with pretty pink envelopes and are perfect for Valentine's Day greetings.

The fourth item is a pair of sparkly stud earrings from another Etsy seller.  I've been told by the artisan that they are carved and polished resin made to emulate druzy (a glitter effect), then attached to posts. These are festive and versatile enough to wear for different occasions.

Because I was somewhat underwhelmed with this box, I went back and looked at reviews from several other sources.  This month seems to be quite representative of previous months in terms of the quality and quantity of items that have been included in past Aster Market boxes. I like their mission of sending hand made small batch items but at this price point, there needs to be more value in the box if this company is going to survive.

If you're interested in trying Aster Market, the code FIRSTMONTH20 will get 20% off your first box. Your box will ship during the first week of the month after you sign up. With the discount incentive, I do think this box is worth checking out but after that, you're on your own!

Thanks for reading,

Cheryl

Prospurly January 2016 Review + 10% Discount Code for Life!

The best subscription boxes (in my opinion) are those that deliver products you couldn't easily find for yourself and that expose you to things you might not otherwise try. That's what Prospurly does best.  They send six to eight artisan crafted products each month with a total retail value of around $80. These small batch goods are usually bath and body products or snacks, sometimes with other interesting additions.

The theme for January's box is "A New Adventure" with a focus on empowering mental and physical health. The big branded orange box arrived by USPS Priority mail and contained seven items.

A card attached inside the lid introduces the month's theme on one side and tells about the products on the other side.

This 8 oz. package of natural and vegan Lavender laundry soap is hand made by La Conner. This is highly concentrated and the label says it will do 16 to 32 loads of wash.  I don't remember ever receiving laundry soap in a sub box before!

I have a feeling I'm not the intended personality type for the next item, which is a pack of four affirmation cards.  One side has an inspirational phrase and the other side has fill-in-the-blank prompts. Way too touchy feely for me but the cards will make good book marks. The stated retail price of $7.95 for these is ridiculous.

This cute tin contains a Detox Foot Soak from Blythe Market.  This is made with dead sea salts, epsom salts, baking soda and essential oils.  My feet and I are looking forward to this!

This pump spray bottle contains Geranium + Argan Oil Facial Serum from Fawn Lily Botanica...what a beautiful name!  This is pretty intense stuff so one small pump goes a long way towards hydrating and protecting skin.

When I opened the January Prospurly box and saw this on the top, I thought a packer had dropped it in by accident.  But I checked the information card and lo and behold, the inclusion was intentional. This is a Faber-Castell mechanical pencil in slate gray.  It has rubber dot grips on the barrel and a very fine lead, which I love. I didn't expect this in a Prospurly box but it's definitely something I will use every single day.

It wouldn't be a subscription box without a lip balm!  This one is also from Fawn Lily Botanica and has a Spiced Chai + Coconut scent. Lots of good emollient ingredients in this one.

This little brown bottle contains Chamomile-Infused Honey Elixir from Barefoot Apothecary.  I would have had no idea what to do with this but the card says "Use this incredible elixir in tea, by the spoonful to sooth the throat or drizzle atop any delicious creation you desire". Ingesting products in apothecary-type packaging makes me nervous so I'll tread carefully with this one.

That's it for January's Prospurly box.  My favorite products were the laundry soap, the foot soak and strangely enough, the mechanical pencil, unexpected as it was. I'm less excited about the facial serum and the honey elixir.  The lip balm, however boring, will be used.  The affirmation cards are just not my thing so are pretty useless. So, this was a mixed bag for me.

The cost of a Prospurly box is $49.95 per month but you can use any of the codes SPRING, BREAKFAST, FOUNDER or SUMMER to get a 10% discount for the life of your subscription, making it $44.96 per month. The types of products they include are pretty consistent so if interested, read several months' reviews to see if this box is for you.  Here's a link to my September review, if you want to check that out.

If you like subscription box reviews, be sure to subscribe (upper right) to get updates delivered automatically to your in box!

Surprise My Pet Review, January 2016 + 10% & 25% Discount Codes!

There are quite a few dog boxes in the subscription box universe. A favorite around our house is Surprise My Pet. The toys and treats from most of these companies are similar (probably sourced from the same vendors) but what distinguishes Surprise My Pet is that they include some type of costume or doggy accessory in each box.  So, if your pup is a ham (like both of mine are), they can dress fashionably year round!

When signing up for Surprise My Pet, you provide your dog's gender, weight and birthday and they send appropriate toys, treats and costumes. Each box contains 4 to 6 items with the treats being mostly natural and organic.  Boxes are $25 per month...$23 per month if you sign up for three months and $19 per month if you sign up for a full year. (Basically, you get three free months with an annual subscription; a very good deal!)

January's Surprise My Pet box didn't really have a theme but it contained two toys, one accessory, three edibles and something fun for pup parents.  (I apologize in advance for the poor photography in this review; I could use a lighting technician!)

The product card gives minimal information but does tell a bit about each item.

First things first....how cute is my boy Tucker in his new black and red print bow tie!!! It's made of a soft non-irritating fabric and it's adjustable to any neck size. Without being asked, he sat up to show it off as soon as I put it on him! (His bloody nose, which is mostly hidden in this photo, is due to an earlier fence skirmish with the neighbor dogs. The fence won.)

Here's the bow tie in its package:

There is a rather fierce looking plush green shark with a squeaker buried deep inside. Since my evisceration specialist Dakota could have this guy gutted in about two minutes, it will be going to a kinder, gentler home.

Good thing I took a photo of this bone because it's now buried somewhere in the back yard. This was a big heavy smoked bone from Ranch Rewards.  I gave it to 50 lb. Dakota; within seconds, it was being stealthily removed from the premises by 24 lb. Tucker. (HUGE bone confiscated by little dog! Really funny sight which I unfortunately couldn't catch on camera.) No matter...there's enough bone here to keep both of them occupied for days and days. I don't expect (or want) to ever see this bone again.

This paw print bag contains some hand-crafted treats from an Etsy seller named Shorty's Gourmet Treats.  There are two pumpkin flavored fire hydrants, two peanut butter bones and two sweet potato squares; all most enthusiastically appreciated by my boys!

The best dog toys around here are the indestructible toss/tug/chew combinations like this rope toy from Duke's Pet Products. Although Dakota is new here, I have already seen him playing tug o' war with Tucker and I think this very strong toy will encourage that.  If not, Tucker lives to chew and tug so he and I will get a lot of use from this one.

There is a bone-shaped dental chew from Z-Bone which helps freshen breath and clean teeth. Oddly, the main ingredient in this is potato flour and the flavor is Clean Berry Crisp.

You rarely see anything for people in dog boxes but this month, Surprise My Pet included a set of doggie word magnets.  The idea is to create your own puppy poetry and stick it on the refrigerator or any other magnetic surface.  I was hoping to create a clever haiku for this post but so far, the wheels in my head are not turning.......

As usual, Surprise My Pet did a great job of putting this box together.  All of the edible treats were big hits with Tucker and Dakota (especially that huge bone) and I appreciated the inclusion of the magnet set. I like that they find safe and healthy products and focus on all-natural treats.  Most of all, I love seeing the joy my puppy boys take in their monthly surprise box!

If you want to sign up for Surprise My Pet, the code PUPSRULE will get 25% off an annual subscription, making it $203 or just $16.92 a month....an exceptional value! Also, I believe the code LOVE will get 10% off any plan. Keep an eye on the deal sites for big discounts on this subscription. I know that they have run great Groupon promotions in the past, although I don't see one right now.

Thank you for reading,

Cheryl
